Book excerpt

Chapter 1: The Falling of the Crows

The sun dipped low over the horizon, casting a warm amber glow across the cobblestone streets of Eldermere. Elara stood at the window of her small workshop, her fingers brushing against the cool glass as she gazed at the bustling market below. The vibrant colors of fruits and fabrics danced in the fading light, but her heart was heavy with the weight of solitude.

Her thoughts were interrupted by a soft knock at the door. Elara hesitated, then placed the vial back on the table. Visitors were rare, especially since rumors of her craft had spread through Eldermere like wildfire. She opened the door cautiously, revealing a young woman with tousled hair and bright, curious eyes.

“Are you Elara, the alchemist?” the girl asked, her voice a blend of awe and trepidation.

“Yes, I am,” Elara replied, studying the girl’s face. “What brings you here?”

“I heard… I heard you can help people,” the girl stammered, glancing nervously over her shoulder. “My brother is sick. No one knows what to do. Please, can you help him?”

Elara’s heart clenched at the desperation in the girl’s voice. She had spent years isolating herself, fearful of the world’s reaction to her abilities, yet here was a chance to make a difference. But the fear of failure loomed large. What if she couldn’t help?

“Where is your brother?” Elara asked, her resolve hardening.

The girl’s face lit up with hope. “Just outside the village, in a small cottage. He’s been ill for weeks.”
